Facebook and the Passive Voice January 8, 2007

Why, on facebook, is your status only allowed to be in the passive voice? “Wesley is currently bored out of his skull.” This frustrates me to no end because it limits what you can do with your status. “I am bored out of my skull. People need to either stop going back to schools not named ‘University of Maryland’ so early or come back to the University of Maryland and entertain me. This is totally unacceptable.” Compared to “Wesley is bored out of his skull. He thinks that people need to either stop going back to schools not named ‘University of Maryland’ so early or come back to the University of Maryland and entertain him. He thinks that this is totally unacceptable.” Just doesn’t have the same ring. Plus my Ms. Fleischaker would probably give me C- on my status for excessive use of the passive voice and lack of conciseness. Although, she would also say you’re not supposed to use first person, so I guess I’m screwed either way.

Okay, so now I’m rereading this post and I’m not even sure it’s in the passive voice. Argh. English majors, a little help please. Screw it. What I really meant to say is facebook only allowing third person status annoys me to no end. I wait with agonizing patience for Mark Zuckerberg to get rid of this restriction.
